I spoke a fair bit with the guy that manages the recording of PyCon
sessions.  He started with recording the python users group meetings and
scaled up.

One of the things he said made it hard to get other people to volunteer to
do this is that you pretty much need to dedicate an hour before the meeting
and half an hour after the meeting to getting set up.

He started with just a DV camcorder, but the audio was terrible.  Then he
started adding things like lapel mics, a VGA splitter box is how he records
the slides, a mixer, and pretty soon it's a ton of kit to be hauling around
and setting up and tearing down.

Those are my initial thoughts.
