[lug] multi-monitor question - sw part

Hi,

This did the trick. Well, almost: now there is the software part
that's blocking me (thus I changed the subject).
What happens is that, explicitly turning off the laptop screen (it was
already off because of the lid being closed), makes turning on the
second screen possible. Now the problem is that in this setup,
Ubuntu's (or is it just gnome's) resolution change app does not let me
move the screens at will (it does if I have only the laptop screen and
another monitor hooked).
So the monitors are stuck in a clone status even if I don't click the
clone button, because they cannot be moved from the same virtual
coordinates.
Oddly, nothing changes in xrandr.
Later today I'll try a Ubuntu 10.04 live and a Fedora live to see if
they behave differently.

Thanks,
Davide
