I have a laptop that he's welcome to use. Specs as follows:

2002 Sony Vaio
Single core CPU @ 1.2 GHz
500 MB RAM
30 GB hard drive
10 base-T ethernet (maybe 10/100)
CD/DVD-ROM optical drive (bootable)
USB 1.x (I'm not sure if it's bootable, certainly not the best choice 
for an install, even if it is)
1394/Firewire
1024x768 video
RS-232
WinModem
