[lug] error loading operating system

I just installed the latest openSuse on my desktop and when I reboot it
gives me "Error loading operating system"  after the "Verifying DMI Pool
Data ......."
I tried to do the update install from the disk, same result.  Did another
full install, same result.  I did have a version of XP 64 on it previously.
It's a quad-core AMD64 with 4gigs of ram.  It's runs at 2.3ghz.  The first
install I did the full erase wiping out the Windows.  The hardware is only a
couple of years old.  This should be easy for one of you, no?
