You might also look at things written by Kernighan, Ritchie, Pike, et. al. (I got a lot out of "The 
UNIX Programming Environment" when I started) and there are some useful bits in ESR's "The Art of 
Unix Programming".  But switch to Perl (or Python) before you get too deep into AWK.
