I'm a proud N900 owner.  The carriers charge an arm an a leg for services 
and you are limited to a GSM provider.  The N900 comes totally open but
there aren't a lot of existing download and go applications like there 
are for Apple or Android.

The N900 is a developer's phone.   It's made by programmers for programmers.
If you aren't comfortable with beating on software, get an Android.

Also check the dates on the Verizon data plans.  You might be able to get
an "unlimited" data plan before the rates go up if you get a phone like
today.
