Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your response.  NM is disabled as it caused problems with a Vz cell modem.  Wanted this netbook to be able to connect by 3 methods - wifi, cell, and wired and the cell part was a show-stopper.  Also, hoping to move ultimately to a completely embedded, non-gnome NM dependency.  

Got everything working except the wired link status change doesn't seem to tickle a DHCP release/request cycle like you would expect w/NM in the picture.

Are you aware of anything similar to interfaces pre-up/down, post-up/down directives but which are alert to link status changes instead of interface up/down changes?  I may just have to frequently monitor status output from mii-tools as a workaround.
