I agree with most of what you say, but one point. In a recession
"stimulating the economy" is absolutely necessary. We can argue that
they have done too much or too little or the wrong kind of stimulus or
the wrong sectors of the economy or whatever, but doing nothing would
have brought America in a mess similar to where Europe is now, We can
argue that the government could have done better, but I'm glad they
did what they did (starting with the last Bush interventions).

Of course these interventions must stop when we see the end of the
tunnel, which looks like is now (unless Europe brings us down again)
