ORACLE TO BUILD $199 NETWORK COMPUTERS
Oracle, the database software company known for its "enterprise resource
planning" software for large corporations, will create a new company that
will sell $199 "network computers" using the Linux operating system,
Netscape software for browsing the Web, and an Intel microprocessor. Oracle
chief Larry Ellison has been a long-time foe of Microsoft, and this new plan
would be a way of developing a strong alternative to Microsoft operating
systems. (Bloomberg News/New York Times 28 Oct 99)
