as a "the software maintainers chose to make the software more paranoid"
issue.  The list can be made "open", but the current software has no way
of differentiating between valid and "spam" e-mail other than by checking
who sent it.

If you have some code for making this determination in a "better" way,
I'm sure the Mailman development team would incorporate it.
