I had a drive fail. It's been a while, but IIRC, I got email about it from the software, and the server kept on going. I got a new drive, told mdadm the failed drive was going away, installed the replacement, told mdadm the drive was back, and the software rebuilt the array.

I was. But when it happened to me, mdadm had been around for a few years.

Yup. There's no GUI. But take a look at 'man mdadm'. The it's not poorly documented anymore.

Give it a try before you spend big bucks on a card.
