Thanks for this info. After the unity/g3 thing, I switched to Mint (Debian
/ Mate), but I liked Ubuntu LTS'es better, so I'll give it a try.

As far as I can tell from the following link, besides not being official,
Mate on Ubuntu is not only possible as your personal hack, but it has a
community support, and works now on the current LTS:
https://ubuntu-mate.org/
