I think I have resolved this to my satisfaction, but we'll see once the
real world hits. You ask some good questions though.

For now, yes. But in a few months, unlikely. More than a few months,
not a chance. I'm happy to label them all identically.

At the moment the computers are all identical hardware, though hard
drives are not. And maybe RAM. But they all have Dell <whatever> on
the front! All running Debian Wheezy, 7.8.

Script is running on the identical computers. These are all in the
field, scattered across the country, or will be. They will be logging
data from an instrument I take care of. I'm going to leave a few USB
drives with our local contacts, and full ones will be sent to me every
two or three months. Well, not full, but when they have two three
months worth of data on them. When a replacement/empty USB drive is
plugged in, I need it to just work. Every time. After a couple years,
the USB drives will be a mix-mash, though I will try and keep them as
similar as possible.

If the talking monkey responds to "SUDO!!!!," then yes. I'll probably
just run the script in root's crontab. That said, I would like this to
run as a regular user if it can be made to happen, but it's not a show
stopper.

Cheers,
Gary
