Regarding the "mode" in mount:

My experience (at least, with Windows partitions listed in /etc/fstab) has been
that the mode is actually a UMASK, and setting it to 777 tells the system
"don't let ANYONE have access to this".

Try setting it to 2 (read/write/execute for user and group, read/execute for
anyone else) and see if that works.
