from the on-line san francisco chronicle, 21 oct 99:

As the open source software Linux gives
Microsoft's Windows operating system its first real
challenge, dozens of Web sites have proliferated
that are devoted to the movement.

Now Red Hat, the North Carolina company that
sells and supports Linux operating systems, plans to
start an online journalistic venture devoted to
authoritative coverage of the open source
 phenomenon.

Red Hat has hired U.S. News and World Report's
technology correspondent Russ Mitchell, a veteran
scribe who has served as a Business Week bureau
chief and managing editor of Wired magazine.

Mitchell is editor in chief of the company's Web site
at www. redhat.com and now is starting up a San
Francisco Web publication called Wide Open that
will cover the open source movement, which
advocates giving away for free the computer code
 for software like Linux.

Mitchell and Red Hat say the site -- to debut early
next month at www.wideopen.com -- will be an
independent look at all things open source. If that
means writing something flattering about a Red Hat
competitor, or negative about Red Hat, so be it.

it's running now
