If you use regular command line ftp you might also consider using the
"hash" command.  It prints pound signs as it downloads (one pound sign a
block?).  Anyway, if you do it over a home connection, it's nice to see
that its actually doing something.  So to summarize:

% ftp hostname
>> type [binary|ascii]
>> prompt
>> hash
>> mget glob
>> quit
%
