This is a short followup to the recent discussion of inexpensive network cards.
I tried FTPing a large file from one computer to another on my home network.
Normally I see around 3 to 3.5 megabytes per second, so I was VERY surprised to
see figures in the 70-80 kbytes/second range. This was the case with data
flowing from my main computer to the dual-boot system - transfers in the other
direction went at full speed.
The only difference I could think of was that I'd installed an Adaptec PCI SCSI
host adapter (AHA 2940UW), and I couldn't see why that would cause a problem.
So I went hunting at Google, and discovered quite a few people have had the
same problem with the newer Netgears (with the PNIC chipset (tulip clone)) when
they're also using Adaptecs. And now I now why my mother's Windows computer
(also Netgear and Adaptec) has such a slow download rate from her Linux box.
I guess the rule is: if you are using (or think you might end up using) Adaptec
SCSI cards, then you'd better shy away from the Netgears.
