Presentation: Computer Gaming under Linux
Speaker: Ed Meyer <EMeyer at equuscs.com> and
Michael Hammel <mjhammel at graphics-muse.org>
Abstract:
This presentation will discuss various aspects of computer gaming under
Linux. In particular, hardware acceleration and the products that are
available. Competing rendering options (ie Glide, D3D, OpenGL) and how
they can or can't be used in Linux. I also want to talk a little about
the other hardware that goes with gaming (ie sound cards, hard drives,
mice etc).
I'd like to cover installations a little - but since everyone's machine is
different I only plan to cover where they can find info or download
files. Also since I'm not a Linux guru I'm not sure I'd be able to
trouble shoot many problems. But I can point them to some helpful
locations.
I then want to cover some games which are being ported to Linux and show
some of the games which have already been released. I've also got some
links to sites which collect petitions to present to developers to
encourage them to port their games to Linux.
In my original outline I planned on talking about games in Wine and Dosemu
but I'd prefer to focus on those games which are native to Linux. Also I
couldn't get Dosemu to work this weekend and I'm not sure if I will by the
meeting. :-)
After that I was going to touch on the gaming community and lan parties.
How to find them and why they would want to go to one.
Then I'll open it up to questions...
