Subject: [BLUG-ANNOUNCE] Linux Installation Party, Saturday February 12th
Hello,
Here is the announce for a linux party we organize at the Colorado
School of Mines. There should not be to much overlapping with the
Linux Party of the 19th at Boulder, since most of our "clients" are
students here that would be lazy to go to Boulder :-)
Anyway, feel free to come !
Nicolas

Linux Installation Party
Saturday February 12th 2000
Room 270 "Ted Adam", Green Center
Colorado School of Mines
Golden, Colorado, 80401
Morning (10am-1pm): Installations
Afternoon (2pm-5pm): Configuration and demos
How to come ?
You can get maps of Golden, of the campus, and even of the Green
Center from http://www.mines.edu/csm_maps/. Parking around the CSM
should be easy. Due to the week-end, only the north-ouest door of the
Green Center will be open. If you have any problem to get in, you can
call us in Ted Adam's room at (303)384-2314.
What is GNU/Linux ?
GNU/Linux is a very powerful operating system that can run on PC
(desktop or laptop), most macintosh, alpha and SPARC stations, etc. It
is a variant of UNIX, which also provides nice graphical interfaces. The
central point is that GNU/Linux is Free Software: not only can you get
it for free (download from the web, cheap cdroms, ...), but you also
have complete access to the sources of all programs. There is a wide
range of applications running on it, including spreadsheets, word
processors, compilers, games, and a huge amount of scientific softwares.
A lot of those applications are also Free Software. Note that Linux and
windows (or other operating systems) can coexists on the same machine
when specific applications are needed.
One of the drawbacks of Linux is that the installation process is not
always easy for a normal user (the installation of windows is not much
easier though...). The purpose of this Linux party is to help people
install and configure Linux on their personal machines. This is done on
a pure volunteer basis, and is free for anybody loosely related to the
Colorado School of Mines (however, you can bring cookies and soft drinks
:-)).
