humm...well, before making any changes to your passwd file, programs
usually lock it so they know only one thing will be making changes at
a time. 

Usually this lock file in /etc/ptmp. Check and see if that file
exists and is old. If someone else is making changes on your system,
you just have to wait and try again and you should get in. ;)
