Not only do you need "linear" in the global section of your lilo.conf file,
but if the BIOS can't address the entire drive correctly, you will have
problems if the kernel image isn't located in the first part of the drive the
BIOS can handle. The best way to handle this is to create a separate boot
partition as the first partition, at the beginning of the drive that is big
enough to hold several boot images. 100 MB is more than enough.
