a bit difficult to categorize what's a software in linux
actually... like, is 'less' a software??

i'd start with:

netscape navigator 4.06?
x11amp (for now, any faster player? i'm only using a p166)

of course, i'm only a user and i sometimes do programming.
in the case of programming, i'm the stupid kind. i use vi.
