Hello,
I found the error. At the time I created the files for use under NIS, I
touched them rather than copied them, e.g., I ran touch passwd.yp rather than
copying passwd to passwd.yp. This, of course, gave me an empty file that make
created as the NIS passwd.byname and which in turn was empty. Thus nothing
showed when I ran ypcat passwd. (I can only blame the very poor instructions
in the book I was using, which said nothing anywhere at all about copying any
files from one to another).
Copying the proper files to the corresponding .yp files and then running
/usr/lib/yp/ypinit -m fixed the problem.
Now if I could only understand why it sometimes changes the passwords and and
doesn't at others <g> ..
Thanx for the help.
