I set up just such a thing years ago.  I was using one of the network-capable
audio daemons.  I forget what it was called, unfortunately.  It was fairly
stupid, it would simply queue audio requests received via the network of the
sort "play foobar.au", which had to be installed locally on the audio
server.  It actually worked REALLY well.

So, I'd recommend looking for something like that, or setting up a semaphore
so that only one of these alerts runs at a time.  See the "semget" man
page for more information about semaphores.
