I've been trying to install RH 6.2 (actually KRUD 08-01-2000) on a used AMD
K6-2/350. I boot from the CDROM and towards the end of the boot from CD I
see the following:
running install...
running /sbin/loader
error -2147483630 reading header: success
error -2147483630 reading header: success
error -2147483630 reading header: success
error -2147483630 reading header: success
error -2147483630 reading header: success
error -2147483630 reading header: success
install exited abnormally -- received signal 4
sending termination signals... done
sending termination kill... done
etc...
Sometimes it manages to proceed with the install without exiting, but
usually something else goes wrong such as failing to start the X server and
reverting to the text-based installation environment. The number of times
that the "error -2147483630 reading header: success" line appears also
varies with each install attempt, but it always appears at least once...
...unless I remove the heatsink from the CPU! In that case the install
proceeds normally without error! The heatsink is oversized and I thought
maybe it was coming into contact with something on the motherboard and
shorting something out, but I've replaced the heatsink and fan with a
smaller set and I still get the same errors. I also tried disconnecting the
fan from power and even removing the fan from the heatsink, but the only
thing that seems to make a difference is whether the heatsink is touching
the CPU. The CPU gets screaming hot when the heatsink isn't on there, so I
don't want to run without it. I also tried swapping the CPU with another
one (this other CPU had its own heatsink/fan that would not come off - must
have been glued on) and I didn't get any errors from that one. I grepped
the entire KRUD disk to see where the error comes from, but it only appears
in binary files. Does anyone have any insight into this problem?
