the only situation i remember this in, was when people used "golden
orb" coolers designed for p3-fpga / celeron-s370 chips, on top of a
duron or thunderbird.
i've never seen this sort of flakiness with a k6-[23], tho, since
those were in a much more traditional socket 7 packaging.
i've used multiple different coolers on top of my k6-2s and k6-3s, and
have never had a problem. i agree that there is probably some
marginal hardware here; it could even be something as nasty as a bent
or nearly-broken pin on the chip package, so the extra pressure from
the heatsink puts it that much further out of contact. unlikely, but
that's one thing that matches the story. grounding the metal heat pad
on top of the chip shouldn't happen, since the socket itself is
usually plastic, so there's nowhere for the heatsink to touch any
chassis ground.
if it works with different CPUs, then it really does point at the CPU
being flakey. not sure what to recommend, other than maybe just
getting a new CPU (you can get decent k6-2s for about 60$; if only amd
would release the k6-2+ as a retail item!)
