sounds like you don't have your sound device loaded. 

/dev/dsp might exist and be readable, but unless you have a sound
driver built into your kernel or the sound modules loaded, it doesn't
go anywhere. 

If you are using a redhat based system you can use 'sndconfig' to
setup your sound card.
