At Sean's suggestion, I just bought a Mitsumi IDE burner.  It works
flawlessly at the 8x setting (I'm using 12x certified media).

I'm very happy.  Now, all I have to do is get the ATA100 promise channels to
work, and I'll have 4 IDE channels ;-)
