[lug] A bit confused

SCSI would have been a "better choice".  If the major system manufactures
selected it instead of IDE then it would be built into every motherboard by
now just like IDE is today. This would have increased the cost of motherboards
by about $5.00 instead of $100-$300 for a good controller. And there would not
be the 20%-200% premium on drive prices.  

Manufacturers consider SCSI only for "high end" system and therefore can
increase there profit margins on it.
