I worked on the development of X-Win32 from StarNet.  I can strongly
recommend it.  It was top rated in Network Computing magazine, and while
not open source (or free), it is still cheaper than Exceed.

There is a free demo version which will only run for a certain number of
minutes before restarting (which severs all your connections).
