Shouldn't the entry in your hosts file contain an IP? If not how can it
resolve oldschool. Just a thought.

Subject: [lug] Hostname problem
For some reason one of my boxes is not using the correct hostname in the
/var/log/messages. It shows the machine name as localhost instead of my real
hostname that is specified in /etc/HOSTNAME. I cut out a short example of
what
is going on:
[glowecon at oldschool glowecon]$ cat /etc/HOSTNAME
oldschool
[glowecon at oldschool glowecon]$ tail -15 /var/log/messages
Nov 14 14:45:51 localhost PAM_pwdb[19383]: (su) session closed for user root
Nov 14 14:55:04 localhost PAM_pwdb[19442]: (su) session opened for user root
by glowecon(uid=500)
Nov 14 14:55:57 localhost PAM_pwdb[19442]: (su) session closed for user root
Nov 14 14:59:06 localhost PAM_pwdb[19468]: (su) session opened for user root
by glowecon(uid=500)
Nov 14 14:59:43 localhost PAM_pwdb[19468]: (su) session closed for user root
Nov 14 15:08:39 localhost named[487]: Cleaned cache of 0 RRsets
Nov 14 15:08:39 localhost named[487]: USAGE 974239719 971219314
CPU=0.01u/0.06s CHILDCPU=0u/0s
Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't "oldschool" be in place of all the
"localhost" entrys in the syslog? None of my other boxes do this, and yes
I've
rebooted after changing the hostname, many times and try's at that. Any
ideas?
Justin
