For item #2, if you are running XFree86 version 4.x, see
/var/log/XFree86.0.log. And when you say the screensaver isn't working,
what are the symptoms? E.G., no screensaver ever runs, or it runs but
crashes, or it causes X to die, so on. Is it an OpenGL screen saver?
