BIOS was the correct hint.  The sound is on-board and of course there
is a place in the bios where it could be tweaked.  There it was pointed
at irq 5, while sb.o was connecting to irq 7.  I made them match.  Then,
sound output was linked to video output so I had to use the trick of
unplugging the monitor and plugging in video to actually get something
to show up on audio output.
