Presentation: Audio and Video with Linux: How to Watch TV in your Office
Speaker: Scott Herod <scott.herod at colorado.edu>
Abstract:
Recent increases in the availability of low-cost hardware and advances
in Linux support for them has made it feasible to use an Intel/Linux
platform to input, manipulate, and output a video signal in real-time.
In this talk, I will describe the pieces necessary to put together a
system for watching, recording and playing video. This will include
an overview of consumer hardware for reading and tuning an incoming
video stream, hardware for displaying video on a standard definition
television, and some open source projects supporting this hardware. I
will also discuss issues involved with manipulating a video stream in
real-time such as creation of a personal video recorder, compositing
graphics over video, MPEG encoding and decoding, and conditional
access. Finally, I will comment on some additional projects that are
improving the viability of Linux based software as a platform for
video.
