Oh boy. Now I do feel dumb.

It is the fan. No wonder I could hear the fan (the way it normally
sounds) when the noises stopped :}

Great. Now I can blame the actual HD crash on Windoze :}

Any recommendations on a good fan for an HP Pavillion 4440?
