It's unlikely that you'll blow up a modern monitor, from what I've heard.
:-)
Usually it just goes black and the power/connection LED flashes.
You need to find which server you are running and look at that
configuration. Once you get the appropriate modelines, you can switch
between the different resolutions by <ctl><alt><kp +> and <ctl><alt><kp ->
(kp being keypad).
When you type in X, you can see which type of server is being used by the
messages, such as S3 for example. From there, you can trace down through
the file and find out which modelines section applies to the server.
