My own experience (80-user network, 10 HP network printers) was that LPD
could NOT handle more than 5 HP network printers (it would hang if
assigned more), and it was frequently unreliable even with that number
(I taught my co-worker about "log in, su, restart lpd" so he could
handle it if I was gone). If a printer became uncommunicative (the HP
8500s did that sometimes with large color jobs), then often lpd would
stop talking to ALL of the assigned printers.
After switching to LPRng I was able to serve all 10 printers from _one_
computer - and the failure of a single printer didn't stop LPRng from
feeding the other printers.
FWIW, Red Hat switched to LPRng when they released version 7.0, and I
believe they made the right choice.
