[lug] Help in installing a modem

I'm trying to bring up a 'brand x' (I believe it a phoebe micro rocket deluxe)
pci modem on the caldera system. And getting no connection. Even minicom locks
up the cpu.
 
I've been assured it is not a winmodem.
 
Any advise about where to get some info on this?
