[lug] PostgreSQL and Windows (and Linux!)

C'est moi. Thanks for the reply. I can better phrase my
question as follows:

I am looking for a relational database system that I can
program to with Java independent of platform.

I'd like the data files to sit on Windows or Linux
partitions as the user chooses, though this is not
essential.

We're building an application
(http://www.mines.edu/research/ccre) which ships with some
data already in place with the expectation that the users
will modify and add to it. I'd like to ship Linux versions
as well as WinXX versions. Criteria besides the portability
are:

1. Stability
2. Openness
3. Ease of use

Note performance is not currently an issue (my motto here is
that it is not slow until it is slow, a corollary of Knuth's
"Premature optimization is the root of all evil"); neither
are client/server issues or transaction issues, these are
handled by the app code. Note also that management is
currently sold on relational databases.

We are currently using MS Access and it is giving us some
grief, in particular because it doesn't seem to support a
"long" datatype.
