Thanks.  Turning off flow control solved the problem.  

Out of curiosity, could you elaborate a liitle bit on your use of kermit for 
this purpose?  My first course of action would have to be to install kermit, 
as it does not seem to be on my system.  Perhaps if I were to do that it 
would be obvious?
