[lug] X FontPaths

I believe the: font path 'unix/:-1'" sets the port of your font server when
you aren't going to serve them out to other machines(local), but I may be
wrong. Here is the entry from my XF86Config after I slurped the Microsoft
TrueType fonts from an NT box:

# Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together)
# By default, Red Hat 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of
# the X server to render fonts.

      FontPath	"/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ttype"
      FontPath "unix/:-1"

and here is my entry from /etc/X11/fs/config:

#
# Default font server configuration file for Red Hat Linux
#

# allow a max of 10 clients to connect to this font server
client-limit = 10

# when a font server reaches its limit, start up a new one
clone-self = on

# alternate font servers for clients to use
#alternate-servers = foo:7101,bar:7102

# where to look for fonts
#
catalogue = /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi,
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ttype,
        /usr/share/fonts/default/TrueType,
        /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/75dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/100dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/Type1,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/75dpi,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/100dpi,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-7/75dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-7/100dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-7/Type1,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-7/75dpi,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-7/100dpi,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-9/75dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-9/100dpi:unscaled,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-9/75dpi,
        /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-9/100dpi

# in 12 points, decipoints
default-point-size = 120

# 100 x 100 and 75 x 75
default-resolutions = 75,75,100,100

# use lazy loading on 16 bit (usually Asian) fonts
deferglyphs = 16

# how to log errors
use-syslog = on

Here is a good howto on getting TrueType fonts to work with X, which make it
look a lot better:

Subject: [lug] X FontPaths

Hello All.

I'm on attempt number 3 at setting up X. I've had it running, and like it,
but I just can't get it to jive with my work. Now it's been a while and I
can't get the FontPath working.

When starting X it's dieing with a message "failed to set default
font path 'unix/:-1'"

This doesn't look like a path to me :} Can anyone tell me what it
means?

Then the next problem. I've changed the font path to a dir,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts and it's not changing the above value. I renamed
all but one XF86Config (/etc/X11/XF86Config) and did a locate which isn't
returning any other copies. Yet the font path isn't changing. Anyone know
what else could be feeding the 'unix/:-1' value to X?

Thanks.

John
