[lug] new file and print server

hi all,
my former employer wants to configure his existing linux system on a new, faster box, just for file/print sharing. now running RH 6.2 and samba 2.0.6. should I do a fresh install of linux and transfer the files? if so, is there a 'basic' distro that doesn't add so much extra? am not completely sure of what daemons I can stop or leave out of the install. thanks for the input.
