A closer look at the kernel panic msg regarding failure to mount the root
partition revealed that it was trying to mount the wrong partition.  Kind
of strange in that I don't recall having had that problem in the past.  A
look at /boot/map created by lilo revealed that lilo was the culprit, as it
contained 'ro root=806'.  Adding 'root=current' to lilo.conf solved that
problem.

After going through the kernel config and recompile process once more,
eliminating or modularizing a few options seemed to fix the other problem.
