Just a note for the person with the modem that was connecting then
suddenly dumping right after connect. The PAP and CHAP files to view
are:
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets
/etc/ppp/chap-secrets
Both files MUST be read only for root access, with no other access; but
the directory it resides in must be read/execute for all. A typical
entry for ISP's with dynamic ip's (most) is:
your_login_name_at_isp * your_password_at_isp
The same syntax works for both of those "secrets" files. It is possible
to call the ISP and ask if they use PAP or CHAP; most use PAP, but there
is a lot of variation.
