You are, of course, correct. It is a part of the kernel under 2.4.x. The main
reason that I know it's not a direct part of the 2.2.x kernel is that I always
roll my own from the standard source, and when I had a laptop, it was not an
option to enable pcmcia support until after I downloaded and installed the
pcmcia-cs patch from pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net.
