[lug] Which TTY to login?

So I've been having this problem...anyway... :)
When I log into my RH "router/firewall" box at home, I log into "tty1".
I try to "startx" and get the bs "you don't have console ownership" crap.
I look at /dev/tty1, and it says that "my_username" owns the file.
all other ttyx are not owned by me.
OK...so looking closely at this, I realize that xauth (I think) is needing 
me to log into tty0.
So...is this so? Does xauth need me on tty0, and if so...how do I log into 
tty0?
