I am confident that those numbers are real.
On the other hand, I suspect that these are likely monthly numbers.  SuSE
had just shipped 7.1 with the only 2.4 kernel in any distribution (so far),
and had the only new release that month.  Under those circumstances, I don't
find them surprising.
