[lug] 2.4.x kernel question

I was looking through the documentation for the 2.4.x
kernel, and I remember reading something about the
shared memory being reimplemented as a virtual file
system.

I'm not much of a hacker, but this seems like it would
be slower.  I always thought that file system access
is very expensive.  Or is it just physical block
device access (hard drive, CD, etc)?

What do you folks think?
