[lug] Problems with X 4.0.3

Thanks for the educational responses!

I traced the problem to the font files
themselves--when I built X, the "fonts.dir"
directories that X uses to figure out where the font
files are were not generated properly.

I evetually gave up and downloaded the 4.0.2 binaries,
and it works great.
