[lug] Help in setting print parameters

How do I get a transparent or direct binary write - no editing, no
translations, no character substitutions - to a printer? The system insists a
laserjet4l is really something else and gives me escape sequences translated
into the \something graphics.
 
So the usual approach - embed control codes in a print string - gets messed
up.
 
Any suggestions? Or where can I get some detailed info on this?
